If you are registered with the Migration Board, or have a residence permit valid for a year or more, your next step should be to register as a resident at the nearest tax office, lokala skattemyndigheten. Here is a list of addresses (only in Swedish). Once you do so, you are eligible for Swedish healthcare benefits and you are given a unique 10-digit national registration number, a personnummer. You will be able to use your personnummer to simplify a whole range of transactions in Swedish society, such as acquiring a driving license or an identity card, paying with credit cards, renting cars, opening a bank account, filing tax returns and visiting a doctor.

Bring along:

• your passport
• a letter from your employer
• documents from the Swedish immigration authorities
• your marriage certificate (if applicable)
